North Mississippi Allstars “Set Sail (Part 1)” – Better lands, better times coming in to view

Coming from the rockier and yes even funkier end of the Americana spectrum, North Mississippi Allstars have been mining their groove for twenty-five years now, with a dozen albums to their name.  Their next release is ‘Set Sail’ which will hove into view on 28th January via New West Records.  The 10-song set making up ‘Set Sail‘ was produced by Luther and Cody Dickinson and follows their Grammy Award Nominated 2019 album ‘Up and Rolling‘.  ‘Set Sail‘ features appearances by Stax Records legend William Bell.

However, today’s song features Lamar Williams, Jr.  Of the song, Luther Dickinson says, “‘The water may rise but we shall set sail.’ Though the flood imagery is used to illustrate perseverance when times are hard, ‘Set Sail’ is truly about my respect for the first generation American Freedom Rockers who are still with us, whose lives and music stands for open minded and open hearted freedom. Cody and I have been fortunate to play music with Mavis Staples, Phil Lesh, William Bell, and Blind Boys of Alabama and we strive to live up to their example. We have to prove to the elders that their fight will carry on and pass through the future generations. It’s important that the younger generation knows that you have to fight for love and that battle is never-ending. Progress can feel like one step forward and two steps back but we have to press on.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
