Preview: John Calvin Abney heads to UK for dates later this month

US singer-songwriter John Calvin Abney is kicking off 2024 with a run of much-anticipated tour dates in the UK and Europe. The tour marks Abney’s first trip to the continent since he last visited in 2017 with longtime compadre John Moreland. Kicking off with a couple of US warm-up shows, the tour will be a mix of headline shows, as well as opening up some shows for his friends in the band Wild Child.

Abney has been eager to get back to the UK and Europe since his last jaunt. “There has always been a sense of calm endearment I receive from playing there,” he says. “A feeling of homebound comfort, as if playing for old friends.”

Abney will be playing a selection of songs old and new, including many from his latest album, 2022’s critically acclaimed ‘Tourist’. Recorded in an assortment of rooms and hotels across California, Nevada, Texas, and Oklahoma, Abney sees it as a companion piece to his 2020 ‘Familiar Ground’ LP,  Abney grew his songs, weaving drum machines, samplers, and synthesizers into the songs, fleshing the recordings out with sole collaborator John Moreland, who performed his parts and mixed from his own studio, using the internet to create the album over even longer distances.

Following on from 2022’s banner year that saw him playing more than 100 shows across the US, Australia and New Zealand in support of ‘Tourist’, 2023 was a unique one for Abney. His voice temporarily silenced while he underwent vocal surgery, he released 2 ambient albums, Storm Variations and Departure Nocturnes, and collaborated with a number of other artists, both in the studio and on the road, including Wild Child, Ben Kweller, Margo Cilker and Lizzie No. 2024 will see Abney working on the follow-up to ‘Tourist’ and scheduling more international touring, with plans to visit the UK and Europe again sooner than before.
