News from Pitchfork, although be warned – if you click through you get that picture of the man himself bare-chested riding a horse (Putin, not Randy Newman). They report: “Randy Newman has shared a new song, “Putin,” inspired by a photograph he saw of the eponymous Russian leader with his shirt off. Listen below. In an interview with the Washington Post, Newman said, “A person with that much extraordinary amount of power, doing things like that is disturbing but also kind of amusing.” When asked why he’d drop a new song during the height of the election cycle, Newman replied, “I think that people will lose interest after this surfeit of political talk and attention after the election. And I’m just anxious to get something out. I hate having to wait. I’ve got the thing done. I just want to see what happens.” And as far as his views on Donald Trump? “You keep wondering whether people will see that he’s a liar and not very bright.”
Newman says “Putin” is taken from an upcoming album, which is due out in 2017. This would mark the songwriter’s first new full-length studio record since Harps and Angels in 2008. Revisit our interview with Newman from around that time here.”
