Yes. But honestly, the Editor will return. Be patient. In the meantime, we’ve managed to drag ourselves to the end of another week and joy of joys, it’s a long weekend. Having touched on May Day in the recent Folk Tracks Roundup, we’ll not repeat ourselves here (but this is fun), so let’s just go for something upbeat and positive. Why not? Tyler Ellis’ ‘100 Proof’ is a song that you may already know as Julian Taylor recorded the Toronto singer-songwriter’s composition and did pretty well with it – it was on his Juno nominated album “Beyond the Reservoir.” he says of it: “Tyler Ellis wrote it, and I just loved it. I believe he’s one of Canada’s strongest songwriters in the folk realm.”
Tyler Ellis has now recorded it for his own eighth album, “Down By The Don”, and he says that the song’s aim is to communicate a positive way of being: “The song is a roadmap of sorts to help navigate a world gone mad, and encourage resilience and caring. It’s also a bit of a pushback against the ‘suck it up, buttercup’ model of masculinity that was prevalent in my youth and, sadly, still is in many circles.”
And, since it’s a long weekend, here’s Julian’s version so you can enjoy the compare and contrast. We expect the dissertations by Monday evening, ok?
