Video: Paul Simon “Still Crazy After All These Years”

So, it’s Thanksgiving for our American friends.  The perfect way to celebrate is to watch one of the great singer-songwriters dressed as a turkey for Saturday Night Live.  When he realises how ridiculous he looks, Paul Simon cuts the song short and heads backstage to complain.  Simon proves his comic skills are right up there with his musical abilities.  What a good sport.  Simply brilliant. Paul Simon: “It was one of the most humiliating experiences of my life.” Lorne Michaels: “What?  The band came in late?”

Interview: Elvis Perkins on recording old songs and being called Elvis

Regular readers of Americana UK will know a key part of the site’s ethos is to bring new artists to the attention of our readers. What should I do, Americana UK?

Sometimes in the advice game one can start to wonder what you’re doing.  Really, sorting out intermittent letter deliveries through musical advice like we did last time, is that what it’s all about?  But often a small problem is just the way in for something bigger, so it wasn’t such a surprise when Paul Simon, on the pretext of having left a notebook of lyrics behind, re-entered the office.  And he explained that he was having worrying dreams, that his life wasn’t going right and then he put his finger on something we felt we could actually help with.  “Maybe“, he said, “I think too much?”  Continue reading “What should I do, Americana UK?”

Paul Simon’s final concert ?

We’ve all been so busy being excited about the Americana Music Association UK’s showcases and awards gigs that we’ve let this announcement in Rolling Stone ( here ) roll past us a little.  Paul Simon is scheduled to close the British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park on July 15th.  He’ll be joined by Bonny Raitt and James Taylor and the concert is being billed as his farewell performance – it’s also his only currently planned performance in 2018.  As those paying attention will recall it was back in 1993 that Paul Simon undertook a Farewell Simon & Garfunkel Tour with Art Garfunkel (naturally enough).  Continue reading “Paul Simon’s final concert ?”

Pick of the Political Pops: Paul Simon “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”

When we came round from the effects of one of our all too regular Bacchanalia some months ago we were surprised to find that we had decided to divorce our partner(s) in the European Union. The UK in our moniker Americana-UK is more of an advisory description of geographical location than a statement of nationalist intent so we could, potentially, have been Americana-EU. No matter – we are sure that people know what they are doing other wise they wouldn’t have put that stuff on the side of a bus in order to trigger our parting. As far as our limited view from The Bunker will allow this is what we assume is happening: Continue reading “Pick of the Political Pops: Paul Simon “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover””
