The Americans “Born With A Broken Heart” – but not a boy in a bubble

The second single from The American’s new album ‘Stand True‘ has an urgency and a hint of out of control emotions – despair, fear, anxiety and….something else?  Something like “meet me in a darkened doorway / tell me now before we pull apart / were you born just like me, with a broken heart?”  It’s not pure love – not with lyrics like “I’m not tough but I made myself tough for you / I’m not cruel but I made myself cruel for you“.  But there’s a strong bond that’s going to weld together or break spectacularly.

Patrick Ferris (vocals/guitar) recalls that Driving home from gigs, Zac (Sokolow – guitar) would tune into a Navajo AM radio station out of Window Rock, AZParts of the song came from some of that music. It feels like driving through Los Angeles at night.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
