The Handsome Family “Skunks” – Bates Motel? Just down a-ways…

Skunks‘ is the latest release by The Handsome Family, taken from the new album ‘Hollow’, out 8th September on Loose.  It’s a corker – but that’s hardly saying anything really, can anyone think of a bad Handsome Family song?  No, us neither.  ‘Skunks‘ was inspired, Rennie says, by an infestation of skunks the couple experienced, but the song seems like a reeling off of the attractions of a town whose community share the values of Norman Bates – such a nice, polite, young man.  There’s a range of useful products available “centipedes with stingers – do not feed to dogs, guaranteed humane, yes we have live bait” and somehow the service list that includes “we’ll sterilise your yard, run your dogs around the park, now we have rental cars, stop by our cocktail bar...” sounds strangely creepy.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
