Tyra Whitson “Roommates 4 Lyfe” – one day, two weeks, forever

Tyra Whitson’s wife came up with this song title, which reflects on a difficulty which, it appears, seems to still exist in Alberta. Oh, come on, Canada, we thought you were better than that; don’t let us down, people.

Anyway, Edmonton-based Tyra Whitson tells the story better than we can: “As a lesbian in Alberta, people often don’t know what to make of my relationship. They can tell we are quite close, but they can’t make sense of the dynamic… This became an inside joke, and when my wife proposed, she asked if I wanted to be roommates for life. Spoiler- I said yes.” And the reasons for that affirmative response are quite joyfully laid out in Roommates 4 Lyfe, which, across a modern folk-rock take, mixes a positive, uplifting acceptance of a growing love with an equally joyful celebration of a strong passion. What a great thing to celebrate on a Tuesday, or any other day.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
