Here’s a live rendition of Madonna Of The San Joaquin from LA singer-songwriter Chris Pierce. The song is all the more powerful for being stripped back and performed solo acoustic, with just light, fluttering guitar as backing; all the focus is on Chris Pierce’s emotive vocal performance and the narrative intent of his thought-provoking lyrics. He brings sensitivity and empathy to this important theme: the challenges faced by immigrants, who are searching for the best life for their families. His authentic tale and stirring, emotional delivery confront us with the reality of their lives: “She’s running right now // Aching in her bones // With a plastic bag // Holding everything she owns.” It’s direct and impactful.
Pierce says of the single: “We should celebrate the diversity of our country; not instil fear in the people whose labor helps sustain our communities while they seek a better future for their families. ‘Madonna of the San Joaquin’ is a direct challenge to the hypocrisy of those who invoke scripture and morality while turning their backs on the vulnerable, and even participating in their mistreatment.”
This is the latest single from Songs for the Heavy Hearted, Pierce’s forthcoming album, due for release on 21st August 2026. These are character-driven songs of everyday lives and everyday struggle, celebrating freedom fighters everywhere; the key message, typically for Pierce and his sensitive writing, is that we do not need to sacrifice love, hope and joy to fight the battles we must fight. He adds: “Sometimes, we’re going to get beaten and broken but, even if you fire, arrest or threaten to imprison us, we’re going to pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off and start again the next day. I’m still going to be out there moving forward with my voice, harmonicas and guitar in hand.” Such themes are as important as ever, and there are few who convey these messages as well as Chris Pierce. Absorbing stuff.
