The new single from Donovan Woods, ‘When Our Friends Come Over’, features Madi Diaz on vocals and the combination of their voices is beautiful over the warm guitar, reinforcing the song’s intimate themes of friendship and long-term relationships. The accompanying video follows a couple through domestic scenes that illustrate the narrative further.
Woods says of the song and of working with Diaz: “Madi Diaz and I wrote this in Nashville the first time we met. I love Madi and I love the ache in her writing. I had this idea about a song that celebrates how nice it is when you and your romantic partner have friends over. Their presence seems to renew something in your coupledom. You see yourself through their eyes, and you appreciate each other more. I don’t think there are enough songs about friendship. Friendship is so much more important than romance throughout your life. I love how Madi extends notes a millisecond longer than I think she’s going to.”
The song is on the Woods’ seventh album ‘Things Were Never Good if They’re Not Good Now’, which is out now. It’s an open, honest album that tackles life’s complexities and things he had been going through, a record he describes as, “.. a funeral to the life I was living.” Featuring lyrically engaging, well-crafted songs, ‘Things Were Never Good if They’re Not Good Now’ is well-worth absorbing.
