It’s time to get moving with Evergreen, the latest single from Bay Area duo Effie Zilch, comprised of GRAMMY-winning producer and guitarist Steve Wyreman and guitarist and singer Evanne Barcenas. In this immediately-engaging single, Barcenas invites everyone to join the party: “If you’re down and out, or all about, don’t mind just dance with me.” Jared Milos’s stand-up bass and Will Baldocchi’s percussion give Evergreen a wonderfully free-feeling rhythmic groove, over which acoustic guitar from Wyreman and Justin Phipps makes us swing and sway. Barcenas delivers a powerful vocal that dances around a gorgeously catchy melody and, above all, she takes great joy in the performance; it’s infectious.
Effie Zilch have just released a brand-new EP, The Kitchen Sink, a laid-back, lo-fi collection of ideas and songs that didn’t fit on other projects but sit perfectly alongside one another here. The duo say of the EP: “The Kitchen Sink EP emerged after realising many of our initial song ideas are captured in the kitchen on a finicky four-track recorder. As such, whenever we record a song that isn’t a fit for a current project, we throw it into our ‘kitchen sink’ folder. Lately, we noticed our sink folder looking quite full, so we took a listen. Hey now! The extras congealed and became their own blend! We intentionally kept the overall ‘comfort food’ feel of their conception moments, refraining from polished vocals and over-processed mixes. Instead, we favored kitchen utensil percussion, saturated acoustic guitars and early morning voices. This project was mostly intended to nourish ourselves, but alas, food is best when shared. Dig in!”
Check out the EP, but stop here first and lose yourself in the playful, joyous Evergreen. The swaying waltz is designed to evoke the swinging doors of an open saloon, into which all are invited to join the hootenanny and dance with abandon. Happy Friday, folks.
