Video: Steph Fraser “Love of Your Life” – an anti-love song

Here’s the latest single from acclaimed UK singer-songwriter Steph Fraser. The video for Love of Your Life unfolds like a series of memories, washed and sun-bleached with nostalgia. These images accompany a song that expressly is not about love, but about not being in love. The words are full of vulnerability, resigned and fragile: “Church bells are ringing, I wish they would stop…I’m not the love of your life // I’m just someone who can be with you tonight // I don’t look good dressed in white // There’s nothing you can do to make it right.” It’s disarmingly honest and fresh. Musically, though, it feels like a big, glorious love song, brilliantly crafted and paced. The chorus soars over the rich, layered sound of the acoustic guitars and 12-string Rickenbacker. Times when the instrumentation and Fraser’s voice swell are interspersed with moments of weary, almost-whispered quiet, as the song moves in and out, rising and falling like a musical tide. Most striking is the mournful melody of Fraser’s vocal performance; aching with sorrow and soul, Steph Fraser’s voice is distinctly, uniquely hers.

Fraser shares: “I like the idea that I could make something that sounds like a massive love song around the line ‘I’m not the love of your life’. It intentionally sounds like a love song, or a power ballad, but what I’m saying is in complete contrast to that. It’s an anti-love song.”

Love of Your Life is taken from Fraser’s forthcoming debut album, When We Make It, due for release physically on 21st October 2026. The single, like the rest of the album, was created with longtime collaborator, co-writer and producer Jonny Wright, who has also worked with the likes of Birdy. The pair first met thirteen years ago when she was signed to Island Records. Ultimately, it didn’t work out with the label, and Fraser took time away from music. However, she is returning with some style. In a breakthrough year for Fraser, she has performed with Jack Savoretti at the Royal Albert Hall twice, having also co-written and featured on his song Only Gonna Cry For You. Those shows were a taste of what is to come, with Fraser joining Savoretti on tour this autumn – details here. This is genuine music, composed and arranged beautifully. Enjoy.
