Here’s the video premiere of the heartfelt new single from Santa Cruz, California-based singer-songwriter Brock Davis. The notes tumble and roll from Davis’s guitar in a stream of melody while his reflective, intimate vocal flows over the top, equally fluent and tuneful. Davis’s words ache with a nostalgic longing and a sense of loss for what might have been. The sentiment of Nowhere Near Ready will be familiar to many; it’s the right things coming at the wrong time in life and lost chances, the moments and choices on which a life changes. Davis presents us with a universal feeling, delivered in an intimate song that feels immediately familiar. Flourishes and layers of instrumentation add gorgeous depths, delivered by excellent Nashville session musicians who have worked with the likes of Bob Seger, Tim McGraw, Stevie Nicks, Lori McKenna and Eric Church.
Davis shared with AUK: “There’s no doubt that, of all the possible song subjects, the topic of love is by far the most popular. And the whirlwind of emotions that come with first love in particular can be a powerful place to go mining for songs. I’ve written various songs over the years about my first love, some better than others. And when I played ‘Nowhere Near Ready’ one night for one of my songwriter friends, his comment was, ‘It sounds like the truth.’ The truth… yeah, I love that… that’s always what I’m trying to do… and maybe I found a little piece of the truth with this song.”
Shot and edited in Nashville by Karl Weidmann of Southern Cabin Films, the accompanying video finds Davis lost in the music and his message. Artistically executed, it feels like a personal confessional and, as he says, it feels like the truth.
The single features on the brand-new Brock Davis album, Nothing Lasts Forever, through which he explores the transient nature of life. His theme was given added weight by a health scare that came just as the songs were being mixed. Though he’s now healthy and well once again, the songs feel all the more significant and purposeful. He says: “That experience, without doubt, reinforced the message that nothing lasts forever. As I was searching for an album title, I realised that there is an overarching theme of life’s impermanence that ties many of the songs together. Everything changes. If times are hard, it can’t change fast enough. If times are good, we try to hang on as tight as we can, but they pass just the same. We all have our own story about how we come to accept that, and these songs are a few of those stories.” Davis is a fine storyteller with a soulful voice to match.
Davis released several albums in the early 2000s before taking a break from the music industry to raise a family. He returned with A Song Waiting To Be Sung in 2022 and Everyday Miracle in 2024, both of which were received positively and showcased his soulful voice and songcraft. The new album is even more personal – check it out for an engaging blend of country rock and confessional ballads.
