Here’s a brilliantly performed cover of the classic “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, delivered by Canada’s Celeigh Cardinal.  This classic, timeless song from Sir Elton is given new life by Cardinal’s rich, warm vocal performance.  She displays great range and power as her voice rises above the fine instrumentation of her band.  Cardinal says of the song: “Elton John’s music has always been a profound inspiration to me, and ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ captures such a raw, beautiful longing for authenticity and freedom. Covering it felt like paying tribute to his brilliance while connecting deeply with its timeless message.”

Celeigh Cardinal will be performing at Moth Club in Hackney for the Canada House Showcase during UK Americana Music Week.  Listen out for her wonderful voice on 22nd January along with a wealth of talented Canadian artists.  She’ll be performing songs from 2024’s “Boundless Possibilities”, her third album.  This collection was a reflection of two terrible tragedies that had a deep effect on Cardinal: “I thought I knew what grief was, but I realised I’d never truly experienced it before.  I am now a different person for the rest of my life. I’ll never be the same again.”  Sensitive, personal songs like these have a real emotional impact.  This honest portrayal of her experiences should help others find solace in their loss and the knowledge they are not alone.  She explains: “That’s the intent.  The only thing I ever wanted to do for people was something that I felt like I was lacking. I want people to feel free to laugh, to cry, and to feel connected. Ultimately, I just want people to feel personally liberated.”

Thanks to her intimate, reflective songs and powerful, soulful voice, Cardinal has received many awards and award nominations in recent years.  For example, her debut album in 2017 earned her an Indigenous Artist of the Year title at the 2018 Western Canadian Music Awards.  The follow-up, “Stories from a Downtown Apartment”, received a JUNO Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year in 2020.  Check out Cardinal’s show at the Canada House Showcase, but absorb this video and “Boundless Possibilities” first.
