Here’s an excellent live performance of new song ‘Better That Way (The Loser)’ from New Jersey’s Jake Thistle. Over a rhythmic, tuneful strum, he delivers an excellent vocal performance. His voice is smooth and melodic and then, as the song grows, there’s an edge of grit and passion as he repeats, “The coward runs, but the loser stays // Takes the pain, but the bruises fade // Keeps his pride, I’ll be the loser any day // I like it better that way.” The words are uncompromising and heartfelt.
The accompanying video was filmed at renowned rock photographer Danny Clinch’s Transparent Gallery in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and the song is taken from the new live album ‘Live At Transparent Clinch Gallery’. Featuring twelve original songs, alongside a cover of Don Henley’s ‘The Heart of the Matter’, the album was recorded at a sold-out show, packed with fans in this intimate setting. Supported by guitarist Gordon Brown, the 20-year-old singer-songwriter is an assured performer with stage presence, an engaging singing voice and, above all, an excellent set of tunes. Throughout the summer, Thistle has been sharing the new songs in a series of gigs. He says: “Playing live is such a major part of my life, so getting to share a bit of that experience on this record is incredibly important to me, especially at such a legendary and unique place as The Transparent Clinch Gallery. I’m thrilled to take these songs with me on the road this summer!”
Thistle’s debut studio single was named Best Americana Song of 2022 by Boulevard Magazine. Recently, his song ‘Brooklyn Can Wait’ was listed in the top 50 songs of all time with a New Jersey connection by The Jersey Sound, alongside the likes of Springsteen, Bon Jovi and Frank Sinatra. Definitely one to watch. Enjoy.
