Video Premiere: Sam Lewis “Chase The Moon”

Singer-songwriter Sam Lewis’s single ‘Chase The Moon’ begins with warm, ethereal tones, before it settles into sparsely arranged, intimate folk. Lewis’s voice drifts delicately over his acoustic notes while added texture is provided by Joe McMahan on electric guitar and lilting pedal steel. Musically and lyrically, Lewis channels the iconic John Prine in the best possible way, drawing inspiration from his gentle storytelling style and the well-observed narrative details that reflect everyday life. The feel of ‘Chase the Moon’ is enhanced by a video that follows Lewis through the routines of a day in his life at home.

Lewis shares about ‘Chase the Moon’: “Chase the Moon was written during the first couple months of 2020 before everything got weird, super confusing and scary. I had recently fallen in love with a woman who would become my wife, and I was thousands of miles away from her on tour in the UK and Europe. I’m never not fascinated about how lives are lived every day and how some choose to live vicariously through others for fear of failure or whatever else keeps us from trying. The older we get days seem to fly by, and all we wish in the end is to go out with some form of grace while the ‘birds sing for everyone’. I’m a proud student of John Prine and often channel him, especially when writing through an introspective lens. I finished this song maybe a week before he passed away from complications of Covid 19.

“Capturing me in both natural habitats (on stage and at home) the ‘Chase The Moon’ music video features snippets of a live performance with Joe McMahan (‘Everything’s Fine’ album producer) and a ‘day in the life’ of me on at home with my wife (Gena) who’s behind the camera lens and offers much more than just ‘pointing and shooting’. The real star of the music video is Lischey the cat (lee-she), who was kind enough to grant us permission to feature her in this production. We all hope you enjoy ‘watching the sun chase the moon around’ as much as we do.”

‘Chase the Moon’ appears on Lewis’s seventh studio album, “Everything’s Fine”, which will be released on 6th March 2026. For the album, Lewis teamed up once again with McMahan, who had previously engineered and recorded his work. At McMahan’s home studio in Nashville, Lewis performed a set of solo acoustic songs, and McMahan asked, “What do you want to do with these songs?” Lewis answered with a question of his own, “How involved do you want to be and how sparse of an album do you think we can make?” Contributing his musicianship as well as production duties, McMahan’s main role was to ensure the songs fitted the minimalist aesthetic that Lewis was aiming for. Lewis explains that the phrase ‘everything’s fine’, “… is kind of a blanket statement I have become obsessed with for a while now. I love its duality and its usage, whether it’s regarding the micro or macro of life… maybe everything’s fine, maybe it’s not, maybe it’s ‘fine’ in the macro sense but not at all in the micro sense or vice versa. I am definitely guilty of using it to define situations that are in fact NOT ‘fine’. We all have different thresholds of what may or may not be ‘fine’, but our unwillingness to accept discourse can lead to a further sense of disconnection if not properly addressed. ‘Everything’s Fine’ is the most appropriate statement for the world I find myself living in at the moment.”

If you like well-crafted, acoustic folk that offers a thoughtful, reflective perspective on life, then absorb the new album from Sam Lewis, beginning with lead single ‘Chase the Moon’. Excellent stuff.
