Here’s the latest single from Julu Irvine and Heg Brignall, also know as folk duo Suthering. ‘Maggie’ is an important political statement, a protest song written in response to the reversing of the 1973 Roe v Wade decision. Since it was overturned a number of states have criminalised abortions or restricted abortion rights. Irvine and Brignell deliver thought-provoking and powerful words through a gorgeous vocal melody: “Won’t be silent you’ll see // May the strength that holds us together // Overcome that which would tear us apart.” The voices of Irvine and Brignall combine beautifully, their vibrant harmonies captivating and rousing. The accompanying video reinforces the song’s message of unity and protest, clearly calling for greater freedom and choice.
The single is taken from the duo’s second album, which has been produced by Sean Lakeman (Levellers, Seth Lakeman). ‘Leave a Light On’ will be released on CD and digital download on 4th October 2024, and available on streaming services from January 2025. It’s a compelling 11-song collection that tells new stories, celebrates female heroines and explores various social and political themes. Brignall says: “These songs have a rawness and an honesty about them. There is vulnerability in the songwriting and it’s also an album full of strength and catharsis. Sean’s influence has helped push our sound in a new and exciting direction. We can’t wait to release it.” It promises to be a heartfelt, tuneful journey through life’s challenges and complexities. This is absolutely spellbinding music. Look out for the new album and enjoy this while you wait.
