Video Premiere: Anton O’Donnell “Skulduggery”

Check out the latest single from Glasgow singer-songwriter and former Twang Factor winner, Anton O’Donnell.  ‘Skulduggery’ finds O’Donnell in a forceful mood, with pounding drums, pulsing bass and Roscoe Wilson’s fuzzy guitar forming a stirring, full sound over which Anton delivers a compelling, powerful vocal.  The song has loads of groove with extra depths and heights from Russ Pahl’s sweeping pedal steel and a burst of harmonica from O’Donnell.  In the accompanying video, we get to see O’Donnell and his talented band at work, rocking and driving their way through ‘Skulduggery’.

Lyrically, it’s a thought-provoking piece about conflict and perceptions as O’Donnell explains: “I was going to call this song, ‘A Day in the life: Under Occupation’. There’s something quite embarrassingly sad about how mainstream media/news portrays conflict in different parts of the world; the narrative can come across very one-sided and in the favour of the oppressor. But when you dig a little deeper, the opposite is true.”

Known for his work with his band Anton & The Colts as well as his solo releases, O’Donnell released his latest album, ‘Forty’s the New Thirty’, in May 2023 – see our review here.  To celebrate his 40th birthday, O’Donnnell put together a collection of home recordings, featuring both old and new compositions.  Take a look at our review here.  It’s a fine place to start for any readers who are unfamiliar with his work and it’ll keep you going until the next album, coming in the autumn 2023.
