Video Interview: Freddy Trujillo on “I Never Threw a Shadow at It” and touring the UK

Celebrating a family history that predates California’s annexation by America and Chicano rock.

Covert art for Freddy Trujillo album Never Threw A Shadow At ItThirty years of playing bass with Richmond Fontaine and the Delines means that Freddy Trujillo has been on his own musical journey that has also seen him move from the Greater Los Angeles Area to Portland, Oregon, Like many musicians, he took the opportunity given by the pandemic to write and record his fourth solo album, ‘I Never Threw a Shadow at It’, that celebrates his Chicano heritage. Americana UK’s Martin Johnson caught up with Freddy Trujillo over Zoom to discuss ‘I Never Threw A Shadow At It’ and what his Chicano heritage means to him. He also explains how working closely with Willy Vlautin has influenced his own songwriting, making him much more aware of how songs can tell actual stories and have a more narrative-type construction rather than the more obvious verse chorus verse structure. While the Beatles and punk rock were obvious influences, he gives a quick history of Chicano rock, highlighting the main artists from the ‘40s through the ‘60s to the present day. While his family’s roots in California go back to before its annexation by America, he shares his personal experiences of the prejudice that can be experienced by the Chicano community. Freddy also shares some of his experiences in the UK as the Delines were building their audience. Details of Freddy Trujillo’s solo shows and shows with the Delines are listed below.

Freddy Trujillo’s ‘I Never Threw a Shadow at It’ is out now as an independent release.

I've been a music obsessive for more years than I care to admit to. Part of my enjoyment from music comes from discovering new sounds and artists while continuing to explore the roots of American 20th century music that has impacted the whole of world culture.
