Video Premiere: Griefcat “Socks”

Let’s start our week with something lighthearted, something intended to bring a little humour and joy into our lives. This Monday morning, we have Griefcat to thank for lifting our spirits with their new single ‘Socks’, sung with their tongues firmly in their cheeks. Musically, the instrumentation, rhythm and style roll along like a Springsteen anthem, particularly in the intro. The words and video also nod towards Springsteen, focusing on the working people of America. Of course, the difference is that this comedy duo explore a different truth: “…nothing feels more naked than being naked and wearing socks.”

The Washington, DC-based duo told AUK: “As a band, we find it important to highlight relatable yet hidden universal truths in our everyday lives. We also wanted to evoke Bruce Springsteen’s America through the music and video setting – this is a song for the people, and by the people! We hope this song makes people laugh, but also think about socks, Winnie the Pooh, and nudity in a new light.”

There’s plenty of comedy to be found in the absurdity of everyday experiences, and Annie Nardolilli and Louisa Hall tackle it with great wit and personality. Indeed, the band name itself has comic meaning. The name ‘Griefcat’ comes from the German word ‘Kummerspeck’, which translates into English as, “…grief bacon.” This is the weight you gain from emotional eating or, in this case, the cat you get after a breakup.

Griefcat’s next album, ‘Dirty Laundry’, is expected to be released on 19th September. The album will continue to build on their large fanbase – the pair have already had almost 100,000,000 views on social media. Enjoy this quirky video and then check out the new album.
