Patterson Hood “Scott’s Sister” – sibling rivalry

The latest single from Drive By Truckers co-founder Patterson Hood is taken from the solo album “Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams” and is a song that he describes as coming from “The Family Mythology,” a vein of songs exploring stories, dynamics, and tall tales involving his family through the years.  Speaking specifically to the details of this song Hood has said “‘Scott’s Sister’ was the first song I wrote for what became my “Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams” album.  My mom and her brother have had an often contentious relationship through the years. I consider it a sweet song, actually one of the sweetest I’ve ever written.  I recorded the basic track for it by myself at The Panthera in Portland, Oregon. We later added Nate Query (The Decemberists) on upright bass, which he knocked out of the park in a single take. Then the wonderful Kyleen King added viola, violin and backing vocals. It’s one of my favourite tracks from the sessions that produced the album. I’m thrilled to have it finally see the light of day.”

The lyric video for the song also is more than just random images – it was created from aerial footage of Hood’s hometown of Florence, AL and surrounding areas, provided by local pilot John David Apkarian.

Patterson Hood is touring in support of the album including some European dates.  He’s finishing off the UK part of the European tour leg with three more gigs in three great European cities – to be precise, at the time of writing some tickets remain so you can catch him here:

October 28th– Glasgow, Scotland – Oran Mor
October 29th – Leeds, UK – Brudenell Social Club
October 30th – London, UK – Union Chapel

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
