Father John Misty “The Payoff” – read the small print, sucker

Here’s a song that doesn’t offer much in the way of optimism, talking as it does of deals, probably of the shady kind, and a world that ought to get you, and, hey, get this, you have no power, and so “There’s nothing you can do.” It’s a bleak worldview, and perhaps it’s not so far from the truth. The Payoff is the second single that Father John Misty has released in the wake of the 2024 album Mahashmashana. Does that mean there’s a new album coming? Maybe. When? No clue.

Father John Misty has also extended his international touring schedule for 2026. UK fans will be pleased to hear that Father John Misty has rescheduled his appearance at the cancelled Lido Festival with a performance at London’s O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on Friday, June 12th.

The Payoff was written by Josh Tillman, arranged by Drew Erickson, and co-produced by Erickson and Tillman. The Payoff was mixed and engineered by Michael Harris at Fivestar Studios in Topanga, CA, and mastered by Adam Ayan Mastering.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
