Genevieve & Milo, a duo from Cape Town, South Africa, have released a haunting new single. Slow is a gorgeously absorbing song that begins with a warm acoustic strum before Genevieve’s dreamy, resonant voice transports us far away. Her voice is genuinely remarkable, soaring on heavenly melodic currents as the song grows. The artfully created video matches the song’s sense of elegance and style.
Genevieve explains the song’s message: “Slow was written over the course of a few months while I was navigating a period of illness and anxiety. Life felt like it was moving much faster than I could keep up with, and I found myself pushing beyond my limits again and again. During that time, I found deep comfort in my partnership. Through his love and support, I was able to find my footing amidst the overwhelm. The lyrics reflect what I learned in that season: that there is strength in leaning on others, and courage in admitting when you need help. ‘Slow’ is an invitation to rest, to go slowly and to go together.”
The duo have announced a new album, Moonflower, due for release on 30th October. This is the follow-up to the pair’s debut EP, 2024’s Carrying Water, which received critical acclaim and was supported by BBC Radio 6 Music. Influenced by folk, classical, rock and West African music, the album is a varied collection that is at once intimate and expansive, reflective and ethereal.
Genevieve says of the album and the personal nature of her songwriting journey: “When we were recording the album, it felt as though none of the songs really made sense together; the themes and sounds were all so varied, but as we went along, the threads all came together. It feels really exciting to release something that is so multifaceted. To break all the conventions we had put on ourselves about how our music ‘should’ sound vs what we were actually yearning to create. ‘Moonflower’ as an album represents a shift in my own songwriting journey – a desire to tell the more intimate stories of my life. It is about grief, longing, the ecstasy of love, the beauty and pain of becoming. It is an acceptance of all the best and worst parts of ourselves.”
Milo adds: “This album feels like so many versions of us, unfiltered, uncensored and raw. We wanted to feel free to break down the limits we put on our creativity, to pull from all the different strands of inspiration and weave them together, sometimes using their differences to create big contrasts between songs.”
