Amythyst Kiah “Love Will Tear Us Apart” – heading for a blues friday…

One of the features of a great song is that it is malleable, can be reformed and reworked and still stand up as a great song.  And ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ is one such, June Tabor took it and reshaped it into an English Folk ballad, and Amythyst Kiah has taken it and made a fiery declaration out of it, with a version shot through with a strong blues vocal.  It’s good.

Amythyst Kiah has taken the path of sadder sadness, as she explains “’Love Will Tear Us Apart’ is the tragedy of knowing that the spark is gone forever.  The weight of helplessness bearing down, the feeling of being alone in the presence of a partner that is emotionally and mentally miles away and is never coming back.  Here’s to taking a sad song and making it sadder.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
