AUK’s Chain Gang: Fleetwood Mac “Dreams”

Merely pluralising the previous Chain Gang song from Forest for the Trees takes us to the instantly recognisable classic by Fleetwood Mac. In light of Christine McVie’s sad passing, it is only natural to include it in our Chain Gang. Fleetwood Mac does not, perhaps, meet the usual criteria for the americana genre. Still, with acoustic guitars, pedal steel, close harmonies and an unhealthy dose of heartbreak-laden lyrics, this writer thinks it’s a no-brainer.

Taken from the band’s eleventh album ‘Rumours‘, ‘Dreams‘ is one of Fleetwood Mac’s most popular songs. Written at a time of great emotional upheaval with the two pairs of couples ending relationships, the lyrics are loaded with wry hope tinged with regret. Written by Stevie Nicks on the piano, Christine McVie described the song as “boring” when Nicks played a rough version. Lindsey Buckingham developed the chord structure, and the rest is history.
