Well, here’s The Boss covering a Jesse Malin song – it’s the latest single from ‘Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin‘ which is out on 20th September as a 3xLP or 2xCD set on Glassnote Records. All proceeds from the album will benefit Malin’s Sweet Relief artist fund, set up after a rare spinal stroke in May 2023 left him paralysed from the waist down.  Jesse Malin has said of this recording that: “Bruce gave it that Stax-soul-thing that we were dreaming of when we recorded the original. It’s so surreal to me.”   Malin had originally recorded the song for his 2015 album ‘New York Before the War’. For this new version, Springsteen is backed by Malin’s regular band plus Jake Clemons of his E Street Band on saxophone.

Jesse Malin has enthused over the support that Bruce, and so many others, have generously given for ‘Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin‘ saying: “Bruce’s generosity, honesty and support are equally as powerful as his songwriting and performing.  Bruce is one of the guys. He walks it like he talks it. You spend some time with him, and it feels like you’ve known him for years. He’s like my friends in Queens, sitting around talking about Sinatra, the Clash, and the Pogues. He has that passion and excitement for life.  While I was working hard on my recovery at a clinic in Argentina, I had no idea that my friends and the producers of this record were reaching out to so many great artists to have them do versions of my songs. When I heard these versions, especially ‘She Don’t Love Me Now’, it took me out of a dark time. I felt excited about life again, in a way that only music can do.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
