Nice interview in the Guardian today where she has some sensible thoughts on country music:

"It can be corny! Country music aims straight for the heart and when it misses, it misses really badly. And that’s the stuff that makes the most noise and takes up most space. But then you hear something like George Jones’s Once You’ve Had the Best, and you hear the simplicity of his phrasing and the earnestness with which he sings. There’s a soulfulness to country music that can elude you if you just look at the big picture.”

Once GP showed her the way, Emmylou was one of the handful of artists who could walk that fine line that meant she appealed to the country music fan as well as the country rock/alt country brigade while maintaining her own credibility. GP wouldn’t have the rep he has today if she hadn’t brought his vision to a wider audience. She also brought bluegrass to the attention of a new audience with her “Roses In The Snow” album and shone a light on then unknown song writers like Townes Van Zandt. A real legend.
