The first single from James Cook’s second album “Texican Velvet” sees the Texas/Oklahoma music scene fixture bring his raw and honest songwriting to bear on the journey of a resilient protagonist named Josie, fearlessly exploring themes of determination, personal growth, and finding strength in solitude. “I wanted to get back to an acoustic sound,” Cook explains. “I liked the freedom of being completely in control of the basic tracks and allowing the emotion to become the marching leader so the additional musicians could follow the lead.”
“Texican Velvet” marks several firsts for Cook, including his debut Spanish-language song and a return to his Tejano music roots. The album’s eight tracks blend Texas swagger with Red Dirt grit, creating a sound that reflects Cook’s geographical and musical position at the crossroads of Texas and Oklahoma traditions. “Texican Velvet” was released on April 11th.
James Cook’s band features Tim Maloney (bass), Ricci Amador (drums), and Jason Brown (lead guitar/steel guitar), are supported by additional musicians, including Kyle Nix, Kevin “Haystack” Foster (fiddle, banjo, mandolin), Adam Odor (bass), Lauren Lee (fiddle), and Jason Brown (dobro). The album’s rich vocal arrangements are enhanced by backing vocalists Hazel and Cook’s wife, Stacie.
