Kyle McKearney “Rearview” – objects may loom larger

Well, January passed us by and for the first time in a long time (if we skip the Covid years – and who wouldn’t want to do that?) there wasn’t the annual gathering of the Americana tribes in Hackney to celebrate all that is good in Americana.  It’s usually a hoto and a half, and sets the year rolling with a bang after the festive lull of  late December.  It was always a great place to discover new people – such as Kyle McKearney who made quite the impact as part of the Canadian contingent showcases.

On ‘Rearview‘ Kyle and his band meet in that intersection of Country and Indie-folk, a part of the Americana Venn diagram of infinite variety that gets explored less often – there’s plenty of “hey-ho” in the chorus and plenty of upbeat country rock in the verses.  It’s a song that’s been brewing for some time, as Kyle explains: “I had this idea — ‘you’ve been taking up space in my rearview’ — for a year before I got around to writing it.  Sometimes our feelings for someone are much stronger than our need to get over them.  Rather than rushing toward resolution, the song sits comfortably in that space — where memory, impulse, and attachment coexist.”

Rearview‘ is the lead single from the upcoming album “Wildflower, which is the first project recorded entirely in the home studio McKearney built himself.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
