My Girl The River “Helpless” – I can try to help though

The latest song from Kris Wilkinson Hughes, a.k.a. My Girl The River is a pandemic inspired song of parental compassion.  ‘Helpless‘ was written during the heart of the pandemic, Kris was talking with another songwriter about the difficulties teenagers were facing during lockdown and how things seemed to be harder for them.  The song tackles themes of depression and self harm empathetically – there’s an offering of unconditional love, there’s also a hint of desperation knowing that the listener might not be ready to take up the proffered help.  And where does that leave anyone?  Well, helpless really.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
