Penny & Sparrow “Breakdown” – love me through the angst

Indie-folk pair Penny & Sparrow released their latest album, ‘Lefty‘ on the 31st of January via I Love You / Thirty Tigers, and naturally enough ‘Breakdown‘ is taken from that release.   ‘Breakdown‘ shows a lot of the musical influences on Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke – certainly there’s The Lumineers and Father John Misty, but there’s also a sixties subtext that reflects the influences of Simon & Garfunkel.   It’s also just a little bit catchy.

Speaking of their new album the duo shared: “‘Lefty’ is a long collection of both real and made up things. We wrote poetry, true stories, literary fan fiction, horror, erotica, slice-of-life vignettes, dream scenarios, saloon conversations, elegies, a toast, a few confessions and at least two love letters. All of them belong together because each one is an extension of us, of the things we love. We are the ties that bind ‘Lefty’.”  ‘Breakdown‘ sounds like one of the love letters.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
