Russell James “The Morning Singer” – Listen

Well, we have to admit to a great amount of jealousy when considering Russell James’ CV – there’s the five albums with the band The Porter Draw, there’s the four solo albums of Americana folk and the album of ambient music.  But, great as all those achievements are there’s also that Russell James is a National Park Artist in Residence.  That is surely the winning lottery ticket of jobs.  As James is aware –  he tells us that he loves living out of his bright-red Ford E-Series Van, sleeping in nature, and arriving to shows smelling like a campfire or fresh off a river from fly-fishing.  Yeah – we would bet that any sane person would love that.

In some ways this is a practical situation as well – Russell James couldn’t do his music any other way as due to his autism he still needs a great deal of support while playing live shows.  And some of that is captured in today’s song which brings in toned down hints of both Bright Eyes and Lord Huron, if you can imagine that.  And if you can’t then listen to the song!

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
