Something for the weekend: Chappaquiddick Skyline “Hundred Dollar Pocket”

Well that’s it from us for another week dear reader. In the waning months of the previous millennia, Joe Pernice wrote and recorded what would become Chappaquiddick Skyline which New West Records have recently rereleased for the first time in 25 years via a limited edition pressing on vinyl – more details here.

Chappaquiddick Skyline was released following the Pernice Brothers’ critically acclaimed Sub Pop debut “Overcome by Happiness”. Recorded at home on 8-Track with Thom Monahan producing, Pernice and Monahan are joined by Pernice Brothers bandmates Peyton Pinkerton, Laura Stein, Mike Belitsky, as well as countless friends who stopped by to help out.

In explanation of the record and of the Chappaquiddick moniker in 1999, Joe Pernice originally said, “Not every kid makes the team. They’re almost always good kids. Maybe a little overweight, maybe they think with the other side of their brains, who knows? The songs on Chappaquiddick Skyline are all that kid.”

I always thought that ‘Hundred Dollar Pocket’ from that record was one of the most beautiful songs ever written, I have lost track of how many times I have wept like a baby to it. The opening track is superb too and has one of the greatest opening lines on any album ever (along with Fountains of Wayne’s “Welcome Interstate Managers”).

Take care everyone, don’t forget Palestine and keep fighting the fascists. See you next week.
