Welcome to Day 2 of our run down of you the readers’ selections. Yesterday we covered 30-21 and today we cover numbers 11-20. All but one of these selections also appeared in the AUK writers’ list. The exception was Bob Dylan who didn’t feature in our list, not because he isn’t an outstanding and hugely influential figure, but more because most of our writers didn’t see him as a primarily americana artist. Guy Clark appears in exactly the same place (12th) on both lists. I wonder if there will be any others occupying the same position when we publish your top 10? Jackson Browne, The Jayhawks, Dave Alvin, Gretchen Peters and Peter Bruntnell all make upward moves in the readers list whilst Emmylou Harris drops slightly and both Willy Vlautin and the Grateful Dead / Jerry Garcia experience more considerable drops from their Writers’ position.
11 (17) Jackson Browne 12 (12) Guy Clark 13 (11) Emmylou Harris 14 (2) Willy Vlautin 15 (–) Bob Dylan 16 (24) The Jayhawks 17 (31) Dave Alvin 18 (25) Peter Bruntnell 19 (23) Gretchen Peters 20 (7) Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia
Tomorrow it’s the big one as we publish your Top 10. Don’t miss it.
As inevitably happens with lists of this kind people will disagree. Where is X? How come Y is above Z? Well as promised you, our wise and wonderful readers, will have the chance to cast your votes tomorrow and it will be fascinating to see how much overlap and indeed…
Top 10 Greatest Ever Americana Artists. Ever? Impossible task. So, let us assume the writer cannot possibly have had access to every potential artist who might fit comfortably into that category and take it from there. We are left then with the music to which an individual might have been…
With a new album in the form of 'Mr Luck & Ms Doom' The Delines returned to what has become their London home, the spacious Union Chapel which provides a guarantee of good sightlines and, naturally, has great acoustics and a perfect stage for a five piece band. It's impossible…
From buying my first record aged 10 and attending my first gig at 14, music has been a lifelong obsession. A proud native of Suffolk, I have lived in and around Manchester for the best part of 30 years. My idea of a perfect day would be a new record arriving in the post in the morning, watching Ipswich Town win in the afternoon followed by a gig and a pint with my mates at night,
Jackson is one of my favourite musicians but in my mind I don’t really think of him as an Americana artist. Still I’m pleased to see how widely appreciated he is in the UK.

Jackson Browne is a singer/songwriter who also plays guitar pretty damn well. He is his own genre, in a way, not truly Americana, but more in the singer/songwriter groove that James Taylor and umpteen others followed in the 1970’s. His love of rock and roll grooves, maybe derived from an early exposure to the Velvet Underground, separates him from the others. He is kind of like Dylan – unique.
What! Jackson only No.11??!!
I’m taking my ball home!
