David Steinhart has a new album ‘Released‘ which will be…umm…released on January 10th and brings his total of albums to almost thirty. This first single ‘Row’ is an upbeat piece of Power Pop which focuses on the topic of coming to terms with life changes, and how the necessity of living drives this forward. David Steinhart explained his thoughts to Americana UK: “The song is largely about how quickly we move on and adjust to our new circumstances after any kind of loss. The lyric was inspired by a scene in a show about vampires called Midnight Mass from a few years ago. The scene takes place with a couple in a boat on a lake in the middle of the night. The man has been trying to explain, to no avail, to the woman that he’s been bitten by a vampire and is no longer safe to be around. She clearly doesn’t believe him. As the sun rises, she sits in shock as he starts to smoke and in short order burns and disintegrates. She sits horrified but about 30 seconds later realizes that she’s in the middle of the lake and someone is going to have to row back to shore. She quickly adjusts to her new reality and picks up the rows. “In a boat on a lake/with the sun rising slow/ and when he bursts into flames/she takes a beat before she starts to row.”
David also explained that this is a bit of a change of pace for him compared to his recent albums, saying “I’ve been playing and releasing very folk-adjacent records for the last eight years in a trio called The Furious Seasons. With this solo album, I backtracked more to the windswept pop side of the street. This is a full-band album with melodies inspired by artists like Elvis Costello, Todd Rundgren, and Mark Eitzel.” It’s a direction he sees himself following for a while as he added “I’m writing in a similar style to “Released” and I’d like to expand on the concept. If I could swing string and horn sections for the next album, I’d be in heaven.”
