Track Premiere: Jesse Terry “Headlines”

Jesse Terry’s new album ‘Arcadia‘ – his seventh original album release –  is out on October 4th, and features a shift in the kind of straight ahead roots-rock that we’ve come to expect from him into a more layered electric rock feel.   Not that that means a single sound – as he explains himself he picks up on many different sides: “There are so many different parts to all of us – for me, I have the husband part, the father part, the song writing part, the touring part… and I like embracing all those different sides with my music, too. I listen to just as much Tom Petty as I listen to James Taylor. As much acoustic Neil Young as electric Neil Young. There’s a rock & roll side of me that’s been waiting in the wings for some time now, and this is the first album to capture that side and present me as a whole artist.”

Headlines‘, which we’re premiering today at Americana UK, is full of that rock side – electric guitars duelling with keyboards.  It’s a song that looks at the role of the media in stirring up dissension, with Terry singing “headlines polarising make you choose a side / Headlines worded carefully guaranteed to divide.”  It’s a deliberate evil, as he notes “the Devil’s in the headlines” rather, of course, than in a carefully argued assessment where the devil will be in the details.  It’s a plea for some common ground, and a coming together.

Jesse Terry told Americana UK that the feeling he has is that “These days I feel overwhelmed & assaulted by non-stop messages – too many of them sow fear, division & self-doubt, in order to keep maximum eyeballs on a screen. It feels like common ground is being abandoned in order to keep the money machine churning, and that it’s a real show of strength & courage to turn those messages off & get back to the core of our shared humanity.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
