Tyler Ramsey “Raven Shadow” – Listen

Two delightful tunes that originally appeared on a 78 rpm disc, given a new life.

In 2012, Tompkins Square Records invited then Band of Horses member Tyler Ramsey to record two songs for their Record Store Day 78 rpm 10″ series. In a world where cassettes, 8 tracks and reel to reel tapes are once again back in vogue, it was only a matter of time before the 78 came back. And the result is stunning. Digitally released to Bandcamp for the first time, the first of the two songs ‘Raven Shadow’ is a Leo Kottke or John Fahey style 12 string (I think) guitar piece that sparkles with big shimmering chords and finger picked runs. ‘Black Pines’ in contrast is a more delicate tune, but with the same shimmering quality to his playing. Both are examples of American Primitive guitar playing at its absolute best.
