Here’s the delightful “Oh Honey, No” from nomadic British singer-songwriter Hannah Maryse. Upbeat rhythms from Rachel Glassberg on drums and Tommy Fuller on bass are the foundation for Maryse’s tuneful keys and guitar. Over these layers, Maryse delivers a distinctive, dreamy vocal performance and Adrian Hermes adds light, playful, jangling banjo to complete the sound.
The video, shot at Playa Cofete Beach in Fuerteventura by Adrian Hermes, features vast, dramatic landscapes as a backdrop to Maryse’s story of the end of a friendship and her subsequent healing. It’s a gorgeously isolated location, perfect for the heartache of this tale. Maryse says of the song and video: “I wrote this after spiralling over and eventually accepting a parting of ways. We shot mostly in slow-mo on Cofette – this insanely desolate beach – to create a disoriented woozy feeling. For the chorus, we flipped it – filming fast then slowing down to capture the euphoria of letting go.”
Maryse spent many years playing with acts like Soft Milk and Sour Janes in Berlin’s underground psych and anti-folk scenes. Now based in London, this is her debut solo single and promises much for the future. Enjoy.
