Here’s the latest single from English Americana trio Jaywalkers. “Move On” is a heartbreak song, applying the band’s instrumental genius and three-part harmonies to a tale about the end of a relationship. The trio is comprised of Jay Bradberry on lead vocals and violin, Mike Giverin on mandolin and Lucille Williams on double bass. After years of travelling, touring and playing together, the band deliver precision performances, fine song-craft and absorbing arrangements. “Move On” is a great example of Jaywalkers’ instrumental blend and balance. Wonderful, warm bass provides rhythm alongside energetic fiddle. Meanwhile, Giverin’s fast fingering on the brightly melodic mandolin is an absolute joy.
The band say of the song: “With this track we wanted to match up traditional old time and bluegrass melodies with modern arrangements and storytelling. The song is told from the exact moment our heartbroken protagonist realises it is time to move on from a previous relationship and perhaps all of the tears spilled over the break up may not have been necessary. While the melody and harmony are heavily rooted in old time and folk traditions, the mandolin-led riff, with its odd number of beats, and driving Bluegrass banjo bring a modern perspective to the song.”
This is the title track from Jaywalkers’ fifth album, which will be released on 28th February. Look out for an album launch show at the Green Note in London on 1st March. The band have come a long way since reaching the finals of the BBC Young Folk Awards in 2008. Five albums later, Jaywalkers combine old and new with style.
