Video: Jesse Malin “Argentina”

New York singer-songwriter Jesse Malin recently spent time in Buenos Aries to receive treatment for the paralysing spinal stroke he suffered in May 2023 that left him unable to walk.  His brand new single, ‘Argentina’, returns to that experience through his music in one of the most deeply reflective and meaningful songs you’ll hear this year.  Malin explains: “This might be one of my most personal songs.  It was written while I was in a clinic in Buenos Aires for six months, doing everything to keep my head up. A lot of the inspiration for it comes from the nurses, doctors and physical therapists, as well as a lost ring owned by a departed friend that was personally delivered to me by Jimmy G [Murphy’s Law] as a gift to keep fighting.”  This is from the heart – you can hear the emotion in Malin’s plaintive voice and weary harmonica.  The intimate video for ‘Argentina’, created by Dave Stekert and Xander Strohm, takes us on that journey with Malin; we join him through the streets, a companion on his travels and through the hard months of his treatment.

Alongside the single, Malin has announced that he will be performing at Kilkenny Roots Festival in Ireland on 4th May 2025. He says: “It’s years since I’ve been in Ireland.  I felt a real connection the first time I was there in the ’90s. The audiences are some of the most passionate in the world.”  The single also follows the recent tribute and benefit album ‘Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin’, a fine collection of songs, featuring a host incredible guests, including: Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, Frank Turner, The Hold Steady, The Wallflowers, Elvis Costello, Counting Crows, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Tom Morello and many more.  All the proceeds from the album will go to Malin’s Sweet Relief Artist Fund.  Check out the new single – emotional stuff from a great songwriter.

Just don’t use the word “tragic” around Jesse. Thro’out his career his songs have been full of energy, drive, passion and urgency … so this latest saga is a mere “setback.” One from which Jesse will undoubtedly triumph. May his God truly bless him.
