Check out the latest single from Northern Minnesota singer-songwriter Doyle Turner. “Paper Maps” is a thoughtful, sensitive song about being parted from loved ones who are finding their own way in the world. When Turner sings, “Same sun on our faces,” his voice tumbling through a wearily beautiful melody, he connects with the listener and it’s easy to place yourself in his carefully chosen words. Nate LeBrun’s gentle rhythms and Dan Schwartz’s bright, delicate guitar work are the perfect foundation for Turner’s warm vocals, elevated further by Sarah Morris’s backing. The video, created by Sarah and Erik Elstran, uses gorgeous natural textures and the symbol of a travelling leaf represents life’s journey; it’s an artfully constructed visual that fits the song well.
Turner says of the song and video: “This song began in July of 2023 with the maps that adorn the walls of my son and daughter-in-law’s house. They had just moved into their first home in Vermont, and as I saw the maps of places that they’d been, the places that they aspired to go, it struck me that the likelihood of them being our Minnesota neighbors was low. Sarah Morris said nice things about the song, and it went a lot of places that I never expected with the help of amazing musicians who grew this song up – all the way to the title track of a new album recorded with Steve Kaul at Wild Sound Studio in Northeast Minneapolis. Sarah and Erik Elstran made absolute and true visual and visceral magic with the video they created to accompany this song on its travels out into the world.”
After his collaboration with Ted Hajnasiewicz called Together, We Are The International Treasures and touring together as International Treasures, Turner has released solo album “Paper Maps”, which is out now. Absorb yourself in the perfect country-folk style and tunefulness of Turner’s voice.
