Americana UK is saddened to hear of the passing of Willie Meighan, the face of and one of the guiding lights of the Kilkenny Roots Festival. Willie was the man who ran ” the happiest little record shop in the world,” Roller Coaster Records, a haven for all who entered with his passion for music enduring throughout the tough times of downloading and musical piracy. A focal point for anyone musically minded, he shared his enthusiasm with anyone who walked through the doors.
Several of the Americana UK writers knew Willie and a couple of them were privileged enough to acknowledge him as a friend. He stoically managed his illness over the past year and despite his struggles he continued to share his passion for music online. A recent interview with the Irish Times revealed his prognosis but spent more time talking to him about his record shop and music, typical Willie.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to Willie’s wife, Aisling Hoy, his family and friends. Judging by the outpouring on social media he’ll be missed by many. As the sign on Roller Coaster Records says today, “Boss, there is a light and it will never ever ever go out.”
