Kaatwalk “Open Your Eyes” – can you really not see what’s before you?

Kaatwalk is a pretty busy Twin Cities-based musician; she releases solo material, has a duo with Marv Gohman (who plays banjo on today’s song) called Marv & Kaat, and she also sings with the band, The Holy North. She’s been releasing solo singles for a few years now, and Open Your Eyes is taken from her latest EP, A Week In June. It’s a song that challenges the listener to take a look around them and try and notice some things that are happening, even if “we didn’t vote the same“.

What kind of things? Well, Kaat has a list: “I saw a neighbour handing out food and coats / I saw a child get detained / I saw a girl with a sign today / with words of loss and words of love / ‘ cos someone lost their life today and a child lost their mom.” She has some questions as well: “how long will it take for you to open your mind? How long will it take for you to open your eyes? How long?” There’s a feeling conveyed in her voice that it might take a long time…maybe too long a time.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
