Elvis Costello “Phonographic Memory” – Listen

Elvis Costello is….oh, we all know who Elvis Costello is (god damn it!).  What we have here is a new track – the B side to the recently released ‘We Are All Cowards Now‘.  ‘Phonographic Memory‘ is an apocalyptic fantasy of Orson Welles and the collapse of civilisation.

What makes this a track rather than a song is that Costello narrates the tale over an acoustic backing track.  It’s rather cool.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
