Emét “The Chelsea Hotel Is Closed Until Further Notice” – paging Mr Cohen

North of Ireland born singer Emét has relocated to Calgery from London, but they recorded this song for their new album ‘Carlin’s Farm‘ at Belfast’s Half Bap Recording Studios.  The new single is inspired some by Leonard Cohen, as Emét explains: “The song was inspired by a Leonard Cohen self-portrait which he captioned “one of the days when the hat doesn’t help”. I resonated with the idea of small inconveniences/comforts which can make or break a day, and so wrote this song to reach its climax at the (currently closed) Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan, New York.  I really did visit the Chelsea Hotel a few years back in the hopes of walking the same halls as Cohen and Bob Dylan, and so it felt like an appropriate way to link the song back to ‘Field Commander Cohen’.

Whilst Emét clearly nods towards LC, they also remind us of a scrubbed up Bright Eyes with a touch of Bonnie “Prince” Billy, especially when you see Emét dance (which you can sneak a peak of here).

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
