Jesper Lindell more than invokes a muscular Memphis sound on this latest single from the upcoming album Royal, he actually took his band on a road trip to the States, booking two days in each of Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama and Royal Studios in Memphis. The results were two albums, 3614 Jackson Highway captured the Muscle Shoals recordings and was released in March 2026 via Yep Roc Records, and the upcoming release Royal due on June 26th completes the pair, celebrating the rich musical history of Memphis.
Speaking of the new album of covers of well known songs Lindell shares that “I know some might think it’s presumptuous of us to tackle a bunch of immortal songs that already exist in exquisite versions. But to dive deep into the material, to actually play and sing the songs instead of just listening to them—that was an invaluable experience for us, one we learned a lot from. I’m grateful I got to do this and proud of the result.”
It really was a return to Jesper Lindell’s musical roots – he may have been born and raised in the small lakeside town of Ludvika, Sweden, but from the start playing in his local scene it was a soulful mix of rock, roots, and R&B that propelled him to modest bars and rehearsal rooms, leading to his becoming a staple of the Scandinavian soul-rock resurgence, over the years refining his own style that pulls on influences such as Van Morrison and The Band. He’ll be hitting the road through the Summer – so Swedish readers should find him somewhere nearby in July and August.
