Madison Olds “When I Lost You” – painful memories from lockdown

It would be easy to be misled by ‘When I Lost You‘ which features a very modern folk-pop sound which could easily have you thinking of Lumineers or Mt. Joy.  By which we mean it’s bouncy, upbeat and features those big cries of “hey” punctuating the chorus.   However, the reality is that this is a song with rather more depth of feeling than, say, heartbreak after a relationship ending.   ‘When I Lost You‘ reflects on the powerful journey of trying to come to terms with loss while trying to find oneself again.  It draws on the suicide of a friend during the Covid lockdowns, and speaks to the mental health issues connected with that isolation.  Speaking about the single, Madison says: “This song is a reflection of the complex emotions that come with grief; sadness, hopelessness, anger. It’s about finding the strength to honor someone’s memory, while still navigating the process of healing and rediscovering who you are after such a profound loss.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
