Something for the weekend: Steve Forbert “Complications”

Photo: J. Aird

Well, well, well – what’s going on here?  The Deputy Editor trying to muscle further into the website, and carve out an additional niche?  No, not at all – it’s just a case of real-world complications and also a chance to reflect on the upcoming long weekend.  Yes – it Eggstravaganza once more, the annual ritual of chocolate ovoid consumption – with perhaps an excursion into chocolate bunnies.  Easter and its rituals – and we need to be honest about this – is an opportunity for indulgence and the biggest pagan celebration by proxy of them all (well, apart from Christmas maybe).  Eggs, rabbits, symbols  of rebirth and the upswing of vitality that links to the renewal that is Spring.  And don’t get us started on the absorption of chocolate – a South American delicacy unknown in the Middle East of 2000 years ago.   How did all these things get mixed up with the crucifixion?  Well, it’s complicated.

Which means we need to find a song…and there don’t seem to be all that many (tell us if you know better!) so we swung from eggs to Easter Bunnies, which are rabbits and the jackrabbit kind links us to Steve Forbert’s second album.  There aren’t actually any songs about rabbits on the album, but there is an appropriate song addressing all these complications in your life.  Have a great weekend, we’ll see you all next Tuesday –  and, hey, don’t overindulge – unless you want to.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
