Brendan Shea – the man who creates music under the moniker of Brendan & the Strangest Ways – had a tough time over the four years it took him to record ‘Are We Sure The Dawn Is Coming?’: he went through more than one messy breakup, difficulties keeping a band together, financial struggles trying to survive as a musician, and even issues with sobriety. So, it makes sense that this is as much of an album as it is a confessional collection of his trials and struggles. Video: Brendan & the Strangest Ways “We Can Beat Mercury”

This is an example of solid country-rock song-writing from Brendan & the Strangest Ways.  The video is a tongue-in-cheek demonstration of the difficulties musicians have in getting noticed.  Brendan Shea’s positive anthem competes with jugglers, dancers and all sorts of other performers, trying to get the attention of the judges.  it’s good-humoured but it’s also making an important point about the many conflicting demands on our attention and the challenges of finding an audience.  Continue reading “Video: Brendan & the Strangest Ways “We Can Beat Mercury””

As part of his landmark series ‘Cosmos‘ the great Carl Sagan made a characteristically softly spoken and reasoned analysis of astrology, and found it was bunkum wrapped up in hokum.  No doubt he’d approve of Brenden Shea’s realisation, after what seemed like a string of bad luck handed out by cruel fate, that we make our own destiny and it actually isn’t all written in the stars (fun as that game can be to play).
