Track Premiere: Emily Haavik “DRIVE”

DRIVE‘ is addressed to all the men who never relinquish the wheel: “How bout now baby? / You ain’t never let me / Never let me drive.”  And of course that’s a metaphor about all the things that the patriarchy hold on to.  It’s a power game – but Emily Haavik has seen through it.

Emily Haavik explains that the song “‘DRIVE’ is about the power of driving, especially for women and others who have been kept from behind the wheel. To have access to a car, to be able to drive it, and to hit the open road, is one of the most empowering feelings in the world. When I wrote this song, I wanted to capture that sense of autonomy, independence, and freedom.  ‘DRIVE’ is about discovering the power of driving, even if it’s late in life, even if it seems like the world is trying to stop you.”

Emily Haavik is from Duluth but now lives in the musical city of Minneapolis with her husband Phil and her son Robert. In her spare time she is a journalist and audio producer.  ‘DRIVE‘ is taken from the upcoming album ‘Wingspan,‘ which is out in the Autumn, and features Dave Mehling on guitars and keyboards, Sheldon Way on drums and Beau Jeffrey on bass.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
